Lawmakers in conservative Utah have rejected a bill to allow police to temporarily confiscate guns of those deemed to be a threat.
The so-called "red flag" bill is similar to proposals a number of other states are debating in the wake of a school shooting in Parkland, Florida last month that killed 17.
Members of the Republican-dominated House Judiciary Committee defeated the bill Monday because they worried it went too far in violating a person's constitutional rights. They also said it didn't do enough to address mental health issues.
Republican Rep. Steve Handy sponsored the measure, which he says would be one tool to help prevent some shootings.
Handy says he'll work with a new task force that's studying shootings and aim to revive the idea for a special legislative session this summer.
