'Truly, Truly Exceptional:' Governor Herbert Celebrates Utah In State Of State Address

In Governor Herbert’s annual state of the state address, he celebrated Utah’s victories in 2017.

“I am pleased to report to you today, that by every meaningful metric, the state of the state of Utah is truly, truly exceptional,” he said.

These metrics include median-household income, private-sector job growth, charitable donations and high school graduation rates, among others.

Governor Herbert outlined his legislative priorities for 2018, which include investing in education, building technical education opportunities, updating the tax code and investing in infrastructure.

“Most important, for our prosperity and for our wellbeing, today, as well as 100 years from now, is a strong culture of work, self-reliance, shared responsibility, and mutual respect,” he said.

Governor Herbert said he recently attended a Sundance showing of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” a documentary about the life of Fred Rogers, known to most as Mr. Rogers. He read a favorite quote.

"We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say, 'It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.' Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes."

“Well here in Utah, I am humbled to stand in the presence of many, many heroes. I am grateful every day as Utahns see a concern and step up to address a problem where there is no playbook,” he said. “And it happens all the time.”
